Introduction
This document describes some of the sensor cleaning methods in use today and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
It is not a tutorial on sensor cleaning. If you have not cleaned the sensor on your camera before, we strongly recommend that you read our tutorial on sensor cleaning here.
The cleaning methods described here are also covered in the cleaning tutorial.
Even if you have cleaned your sensor before, we suggest a common procedure is followed to ensure a safe and effective cleaning session.
(1) Ensure the camera batteries are fully charged, or use an external power supply.
(2) Go to as dust-free and environment as possible to clean.
(3) Ensure you are competent at activating ‘mirror lock up’
(4) Always take a reference test shot before cleaning to assess contamination ( Or use an inspection loupe).
(5) Take a reference shot after each cleaning action to assess progress (Or use an inspection loupe).
(6) Clean in two stages
First - Use an appropriate cleaning tool to remove loose dust particles from the sensor.
Second – If necessary, use an appropriate swab and fluid to remove any persistent marks.
(7) Tidy away your materials after use and ensure children don’t have access too your cleaning kit.
After reading through this material you should have a good knowledge of the different methods available and be able to make an informed decision about which product(s) you may wish to purchase and use.
